Your weak muscles
aren't weak. They're silenced.

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a hands-on assessment method that finds where your nervous system has dialed down a muscle's signal — and restores it, so your body can move, lift, and recover the way it's supposed to. I bring the table to you — Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and anywhere else in Northern Virginia.

Muscle response — beforeafter activation

A muscle that tests weak usually isn't damaged — it's not receiving a clear signal to fire. MAT identifies exactly which muscles are inhibited, then uses precise isometric contractions to restore that signal.

The core idea

Tightness is a symptom.
The signal is the problem.

Most people chase tightness with stretching and foam rolling. It feels good briefly, then comes right back — because tightness is usually your nervous system protecting a joint that a neighboring muscle stopped supporting. MAT looks past the tight muscle to find the weak, inhibited one causing it.

Common approach

Stretch what's tight

Massage, foam rolling, and static stretching relax the tight muscle directly. Range of motion improves for a few hours, then the tightness returns — because nothing changed in the nervous system that caused it.

MAT approach

Re-activate what's weak

A precise muscle test finds exactly which muscle has lost neural drive. A brief, targeted isometric contraction restores that signal at the source — so the surrounding tightness has less reason to come back.

What a session looks like

Three steps, same order,
every visit.

01 / Assess

Test range of motion

We move each joint through its full range and test individual muscles for their ability to produce force in that range — not how they look, but how they actually respond.

02 / Activate

Restore the signal

Where a muscle tests inhibited, a brief, low-force isometric contraction in a specific position re-establishes the nerve-to-muscle connection.

03 / Verify

Re-test, on the spot

We immediately re-test the same muscle and range. You feel and see the difference in the same session — that's how we know the work held.

Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes. Most people start weekly or every other week, then taper to a monthly or seasonal tune-up once things stabilize — we'll set a pace based on what shows up in your assessment.

Investment

Simple, transparent pricing.

One rate, with three prepaid packages if you'd like to save per session. Travel anywhere in the service area is always included.

$100 per hour Cash only
Starter Package 3 sessions $285 $95 per session

A short, prepaid course to try Muscle Activation NOVA or work through a specific issue.

Commitment Package 10 sessions $850 $85 per session

Best value per session, for an extended plan or ongoing performance maintenance.

Travel within the service area is included in every rate — no separate travel fee.
Packages are prepaid and valid for 6–12 months from purchase.
Your first session typically runs 75–90 minutes for a full assessment; sessions after that fall within the standard hour.
Payment is cash only at this time — have this ready for your session. Ask when you book if you have any questions about pricing or packages.

Who this helps

If a muscle isn't doing
its job, MAT can find it.

Runners & lifters — chasing a performance plateau or nagging imbalance
Desk-bound professionals — hips, shoulders, and low back that never fully release
Active adults 50+ — staying strong, mobile, and steady on their feet
Returning from injury — rebuilding motor control once you're cleared to move
Golfers & weekend athletes — asymmetries that show up under load
Anyone tired of stretching
the same spot on repeat

MAT is a movement and performance modality, not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. If you're managing an active injury or medical condition, we'll work alongside — not in place of — your physician or physical therapist.

About

Hi, I'm Scott.

I'm a Full Body Level II MATPro Practitioner, and I founded Muscle Activation NOVA to bring that level of assessment directly to people across Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and the rest of Northern Virginia — no studio commute, no generic routine.

My background is rooted in training and treating athletes, including extensive work with high-level professional athletes. That same assessment-first standard carries over to every client I work with, whether you're competing, training, or just tired of the same tightness coming back.

Every session starts with a real assessment, not a script, because your body's compensations are specific to you. My goal is simple: find the muscles that stopped doing their job, get them firing again, and help you move the way you're supposed to.

Questions

Before your first session.

Does it hurt?+

No. The muscle testing is gentle, and the activation contractions are brief, low-force isometric holds — you're not being stretched to a limit or worked on deep tissue. Most people describe it as unremarkable in the moment and notice the difference in how they move right after.

What areas of Northern Virginia do you serve?+

I provide mobile Muscle Activation Techniques sessions throughout Northern Virginia, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Tysons, Reston, Great Falls, and Ashburn/Loudoun. Don't see your area listed? Reach out anyway — if it's within reach of Northern Virginia, I can likely still make it work.

What should I wear?+

Athletic or comfortable clothing you can move freely in — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt work well, similar to what you'd wear to a workout.

How many sessions will I need?+

It depends on what your assessment shows. Many people start weekly or every other week while addressing a specific issue, then taper to monthly or seasonal tune-ups for maintenance. We'll talk through a realistic plan after your first session.

What do I need to provide?+

Just a bit of space — a room where a table can be set up, or a mat on the floor if preferred. I bring the rest.

Do you accept insurance?+

MAT sessions are currently self-pay, cash only. See Pricing above for hourly and package rates — message or call if you have any questions.

Is this the same as massage or physical therapy?+

No. Massage and PT both have their place, but MAT is specifically an assessment method aimed at neuromuscular signaling — identifying and re-activating inhibited muscles rather than manipulating soft tissue or rehabbing a diagnosed condition.
